EVALUATION OF PBSKIDS.ORG EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE “CURIOUS GEORGE”

This software is the complimentary site to the television series. Curious George is an Educational Tool that fosters learning and exploration in children through science, engineering, and math in the world round them. With it’s multi dimensional construct, Curious George caters for children ages 4 and 5.

The site uses various characters as to capture the interest of the audience and engage them in forms of independent play activities. This builds on their social skills and metal cognition. The divisions in the program are activated by use of action buttons and flash plug-ins which permits free downloadable activities. Each subsection allows a different activity and the audio feature attached, characterizes the software as a multiple intelligence caterer.

This Curious George software activities, adheres to the targeted age group in terms of visual imagery (brightly colored and attractive displays of animals etc.) navigation and language style. Likewise the site allows the option to the adult population to be enlightened about the software and it also provides links to alternative and complimentary activities to explore.

It can therefore be concluded that this software is age appropriate and functional in it’s entity for it challenges and maintains the balance of equilibrium in children as it creates the right amounts of stimulation.

Evaluation 2- IXL Software for Pre-K Skills (counting dots, inside and outside and more)

IXL Pre- K Skills is a Mathematical Problem Solving Software. It allows skill practice and to some extent exploration. The software branches into sections and sub-sections and is easily navigated through the use of hyper links. Navigation in this software comes easy to adults but posses a problem for the Pre-K students as the action buttons are small and would need further development of motor skills for proper usage.Language and construction style adheres to a more knowledgeable audience as pre scholars would be unable to identify wordings used to show grouping and directions. They are unable to link the abstract to the concrete experiences.

IXL’s main features include Audio and Visual attractions made active by action buttons, however, pre scholars are unable to use them effectively due to inability to identify the wording that accompanies them. The software contains no reference to other links and lacks motivational tools for reinforcement (no songs, claps, jingles)hence, the feedback from the directed audience lacked interest.

This software did not cater for the multiple intelligences and limitations of Pre-K students.
